Ronan looked like a cat in a dog pound. He stood in the middle of the Courtâs command station, his skin practically jumping off his body. âWhy did I agree to come along on this insane mission again?â
It was a good question. When Iâd told him what I planned on doing, I hadnât even had to ask him to join me before he was volunteering himself, like some kind of knight on a white horse.
I couldnât help but wonder if he was taking his own words about Balor and his knighthood seriously and trying to prove that he was the one I could count on. And, to be honest, I could see that he was. I wasnât blind. I wasnât an idiot. Logically, Ronan ticked all the right boxes.
But the heart didnât always play by logic.
Speaking ofâ¦
âWhereâs Balor?â I asked, glancing around. He wasnât one to be late. In fact, it was one of his many pet peeves.
âHeâs not coming.â Moira shot me an apologetic look. âHeâs dealing with some shifter business while we go hunt down this stone.â
I exchanged a glance with Ronan. The shifter business no doubt had something to do with the rogues who had broken off from the main Pack. Iâd meant to bring it up to Balor before, but Iâd been so distracted by our infuriating conversation that Iâd forgotten to fill him in on what weâd encountered in the church ruins.
âSo,â Moira continued. âItâs just you, Ronan, me, and Duncan.â
âThatâs an odd team,â I said.
She shrugged. âDuncan insisted on coming. Heâs freaked out about Cormac. Thinks we canât manage this ourselves.â
He and Cormac had always been inseparable. They were like two halves of the same coin, always a constant, always a team. I couldnât say I blamed him for feeling the need to get his hands stuck in so he could do something himself. He would probably go crazy if he tried to wait it out here. For once, I understood Duncan.
âWeâre going to take a car, and then ferry on over there.â Moira spread a map out on the table before us, pointing to our route. It wasnât exactly the quickest way to get to Ireland.
âShouldnât we take a flight?â
She gave a quick shake of her head. âThe Fianna have been monitoring all flights from London to Ireland. Going by car and boat is the only way to get there without being detected.â
âItâll take an entire day. And we just donât have that kind of time to waste.â
âNemain canât know what weâre up to,â she said. âBalorâs orders.â
Moira was right. Of course she was. I just hated that we had to spend our precious hours avoiding detection from the very fae who had wreaked the havoc we were trying to reverse.
âDonât worry.â Ronan shot me a wolfish smile. âIâm a fast driver.â
